State of Oregon Telecommunications Initiatives
Telecommunications services and infrastructure is largely a product of private markets, private companies and private investment. Though closely regulated by government in the past, changes in technology, the marketplace, and the law indicate that telecommunications will become less regulated and more responsive to market forces. What is the role of the State of Oregon in telecommunications planning? Government (Federal, state, and local) has been the largest consumer of telecommunications services in Oregon and the actions of the State government have a profound influence on the market place. Beyond securing a favorable price for services supplied to the state by exercising its purchasing clout, our state government has unique responsibilities for securing access to technology for all Oregonians and ensuring the economic well-being of all sectors of a geographically diverse state.
